Arbor with privacy screen

This is a cedar deck we replaced because the old one was rotten. We also installed this cedar privacy screen made of lattice with an arbor on the top to give a little privacy from the neighbors. Now they have a nice place for barbecues and a place where they can grow some vining plants if they so desire.

This is a deck, lattice, and fence project we did in northeast Portland for an architect. We custom built this lattice to his design and built the fence to match. It ended up being a beautiful addition to his back yard and is a place he will enjoy many summers to come.

Corrugated metal privacy screen

We built this privacy screen along with a new fence to help block the view of the neighbor. Unfortunately the old adage, “A good fence makes a good neighbor” is sometimes the only way to make the peace. There had been some arguing with this neighbor, so this customer had us build a new higher fence and this solid metal privacy screen to help block out the chance of having to see him again and to add privacy.

Patio cover, French drain, and pavers

This customer wanted to increase the usable space in their back yard for the winter months so we installed a polycarbonate patio cover. They also had an issue with part of their yard being saturated with water most the year. So we installed a french drain connected to the downspout of the gutter as well as concrete pavers leading out to their side yard. The end result gave them a covered back patio and a dry clean way to get in and out of their back yard.

Cedar siding for a guest house

This funky little structure came with the property when the owners bought it. It originally was in need of lots of repair but they thought it had charm and wanted to make a nice little guest quarters. We had previously installed cedar shingles for siding on their garage so they had us out to do the guest house too. There wasn’t a single thing about this project that was standard. It wasn’t square, plumb, or level. The walls weren’t even flat. But we just did our best to make everything come together and the end result was very nice!

Roof beam repair

One of the many types of home repair we do is beam repair. It could be a deck beam, a floor beam, or in this case a roof beam. This customer basically had two options, either replace about six beams that extended from the center of his house to the outside, or repair the ends that were rotten. He decided to repair the ends to save some money. The pictures you see here are before the house was painted. You can see where we cut out the rot and replaced it with fresh cedar. We went with cedar because it lasts the longest in an outdoor environment and had very little weight on it in this situation.

Here is a gate we built for a new little restaurant called, “The Grilled Cheese Grill” on Alberta street. They had already built some fencing using corrugated metal and needed a gate to match. They wanted a large gate and wanted to make sure it didn’t lean like the fence, so they called the professionals.

New deck repair

Here is a perfect example of why not to hire unlicensed contractors and why to become licensed if you are a contractor. This deck was only a couple months old when we were hired to “fix” it. The customer had hired a friend of a friend to build her a Trex deck. She told him she wanted it low to the ground and gave him the dimensions of the size and shape of the deck. He came and installed the deck while she was at work and boy was she surprised when she got home. It looked and felt like a stage, it was hovering there attached to the siding of her house without any flashing. When she complained that he hadn’t built a ground level deck like she had asked, he said that decks had to be attached to the house, they couldn’t be free standing. What a joke! He hadn’t even properly attached it to the house anyway. So we were hired to disassemble the entire deck, add a beam under the side by the house, and lower it as low as possible to the ground. You can see the white caulking we used to fill the bolt holes in the siding where the deck had been attached. Needless to say, she was much happier with the new deck and the unlicensed guy never got paid.

Cedar driveway gate

Here is a custom cedar driveway gate we built. The purpose was to act as a fence and keep the children in most of the time but to be able to open it occasionally to back the car up to the garage.

Recycling bin shed

This customer didn’t like seeing all the trash and recycling bins outside his door and he didn’t have a good place to put them. So he had us build a custom shed to put them in. It has tongue and groove cedar siding with a top that can be opened for storing yard tools or toys, front opening doors, and wheels on the bottom in case he wants to move it around.
